On this day in US history, former members of the Whig Party met to establish a new party in Ripon, Wisconsin. On March 20, 1854, the Republican Party was formed to oppose the spread of slavery into the western territories. Despite multiple meetings to discuss the formation of the party happening in other northern states, this is generally remembered as the founding meeting of the Republican Party.
