On this day in US history, the rival football leagues, the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL), announced their plans to merge on June 8, 1966. The first “Super Bowl” between the two leagues took place at the end of the season between Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, but it took until 1970 for both leagues’ operations to become fully integrated.
