MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Attorney General Josh Kaul hopes state lawmakers will address firearms access.
In an interview following the Abundant Life school shooting in Madison, the Democratic AG said there are policies he’s advocated for.
“Right now in Wisconsin, you can sell a firearm out of the trunk of your car to a stranger, and that’s totally lawful if it’s a private sale, because we only require background checks if it’s if it’s being done by a federally licensed dealer, I don’t think that’s a system that upholds our protections and keeps our communities safe,” Kaul said.
Others would include restoring a 48 hour waiting period on handgun purchases and instituting some sort of red flag law
“Fundamentally to me, the principle is, if there are folks who we know are dangerous and we know pose a danger to others, making sure that there are policies in place that keep firearms out of their hands.”
With Republicans still in control of both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature, the opportunity to advance firearms legislation remains unclear.
