CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WJMC) — Local authorities warn of the grandparent scam calls.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office and Chippewa Falls Police Department said Wednesday that five residents had gotten calls from scammers claiming to be a grandchild in jail and in need of bail money. Some scammers use artificial intelligence to copy their grandchild’s voice.
Authorities said to hang up and contact a relative or the jail directly to see if the grandchild is in jail and has a bond. And money should never be paid over the phone with bitcoin or gift cards.
